Art

Intent

In our Art and Design curriculum, we aim to provide art lessons that will inspire our children to develop their creativity and imagination. The children at St Joseph’s are provided with the opportunities to develop breadth of skills using a range of media; paint, collage, sculpture, drawing, print, textiles and digital media. They will be introduced to art, allowing them to explore famous artists and designers from history and develop knowledge of the different Styles and Periods they are from and the variety of techniques used. Reflection and evaluation will encourage children to take risks and experiment to develop their own personal style by reflecting on their successes and how they can continue to improve.

Implementation

To ensure high standards of teaching and learning in Art, we implement a curriculum based on Chris Quigley’s Curriculum Companion; the scheme provides staff with a comprehensive framework that outlines the knowledge and skills that need to be taught in each Key Stage. The scheme is progressive throughout the whole school and focusses on building upon three fundamental ideologies; developing ideas, taking inspiration from the greats and mastering practical skills. Planned repetition helps to ensure that children are able to build on previous learning in order to achieve greater depth as they move through the school. Our progression helps teachers to help their pupils form an art and design schema by;

  • Using concepts as the basis for the schema
  • Strengthening the schema with knowledge
  • Further deepening connections through tasks.

At St Joseph’s we aim to fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum by ensuring that all pupils:

  • Produce creative work, explore their own ideas and record their experience.
  • Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
  • Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
  • Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

 

Impact

Our art curriculum is well thought out and is planned to demonstrate clear progression.  At St Joseph’s, we focus on progression of both knowledge and skills alongside exploring different media and materials, processes, techniques, colour theory, artists, art styles and periods, effects, emotions and visual language.

Children of all abilities and backgrounds will achieve well in Art & design, reflected in excellent progress that reveals a clear learning journey. 

Children will become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques, producing creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences. They will be able to evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.

Children will be able to develop ideas from looking at the work of others and famous pieces of artwork giving opinions. They will develop the key skills of commenting, adapting, exploring, collecting and responding.

We measure the impact of our Art and Design curriculum through the following methods;

  • A reflection on standards achieved against the progression map
  • Pupil discussions about their learning; which includes discussion of their thoughts, ideas, processing and evaluations of work (pupil voice)
  • Book Scrutinies
  • Annual reporting of standards across the curriculum
  • Marking of work in books

Design and Technology

Intent

In our Design and Technology curriculum, we aim to inspire, engage and challenge our pupils to use their creativity and imagination in this practical subject. Using their inventiveness and vision, the children at St Joseph’s will design, make and evaluate products that solve real and relevant problems. They will draw on their broad range of subject knowledge and on on-going evaluation to develop the resourceful and technical expertise needed to accomplish everyday tasks with confidence and to participate in a progressively technological world.

The main focus’ covered throughout the school revolve around, deepening understanding within the developed Design and Technology schemas and we do this by using knowledge categories; technical knowledge, practical knowledge, design inspiration and design processes. These fundamentals weave into the main strands we focus on at St Joseph’s which include structures, mechanisms, electrical systems, artificial intelligence and app control and food and nutrition.

At St Joseph’s we aim to fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum by ensuring that all pupils:

  • Develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
  • Build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users.
  • Critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others.
  • Understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.
